Pedro Almodovar's latest film is a modern horror story about a plastic surgeon, Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) who suffers both  the tragic loss of his wife to injuries sustained in an auto accident and daughter who perishes in a mental institution. Motivated by the disfigurement his wife endured he becomes obsessed with creating a flame resistant skin to alleviate the suffering of future burn victims. He tells his colleagues that thus far he hasn't performed any experiments on humans but in reality he has imprisoned a young woman named Vera whom he uses as a guinea pig for his synthetic skin.

Vera is held captive at Ledgard's home which doubles as a research center. There's an assistant named Marilla (Marisa Paredes) who knows that Ledgard is insane and who sees to Vera's basic needs and constantly surveils her every move through a series of cameras installed throughout the house.

The Skin I Live In is a bizarre, exciting and shocking  experience that is part obsessive love story and part revenge tale. Antonio Banderas gives an excellent performance as the maniacal Dr. Ledgard. Besides Marisa Paredes the fine supporting cast includes Elena Anaya as Vera, Blanca Suarez as Ledgard's daughter, Norma, and Jan Cornet as Vicente a young womanizer who works in his mother's dress shop.
