Sean Durkin makes an outstanding feature film debut with the eagerly awaited Martha Marcy May Marlene. Elizabeth Olsen gives a great performance as Martha, an emotionally unstable young woman who flees life in a Catskills commune and seeks refuge with a sister, Lucy, she hasn't seen in years. But Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and her husband Ted ( Hugh Dancy) have no idea what awaits them when they welcome the troubled Martha into their home. We learn more about Martha's life in the commune via a series of flashbacks and it soon becomes clear that despite her decision to leave she remains psychologically attached to the commune and its charismatic leader, Patrick, played by John Hawkes an Oscar nominee last year for the indie hit Winter's Bone.
A chilling, suspenseful psychological study of a victim of group indoctrination. Oscar nomination for Olsen. One of the best films of 2011
