Saoirse Ronan in Hanna
Friday April 29th, 2011

Director Joe Wright does a masterful job with Hanna a familiar but nevertheless riveting revenge/action thriller with an excellent performance by 17 year old Saoirse Ronan as Hanna. Ronan is totally believable as a girl who has spent her life in seclusion getting trained by her CIA agent-father (Eric Bana) to be an expert in dispatching enemies—she's a lot stronger than she looks. Every great super heroine needs a great opponent and here that role is mightily served by Cate Blanchett who delivers another knockout performance as a smart, sexy, somewhat deranged agent determined to kill Ronan at all cost.

The screenplay by Seth Lochhead and David Farr nicely combines the action sequences with character development as when Hanna becomes exposed to the outside world while traveling with a teenage girl on vacation with family.

Lochhead wrote the script for Hanna while a student at Vancouver Film School in 2005. His dream came true when Focus Features green-lighted the project. David Farr was brought in to co-write the final script.

Joe Wright previously worked with Saoirse Ronan on 2007's Oscar nominated Atonement which earned the young actress an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Good dramatic score by The Chemical Brothers.
