The Descendants is an excellent adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings novel about a privileged Hawaiian family coping with changing mores and a vanishing legacy. The main character is Matt King (George Clooney) a lawyer/landowner who's been so focused on business that he has neglected his wife and kids. One day his wife is critically injured in a boat surfing accident leaving her in a comatose state at the hospital. He is soon after made aware that she's been having an affair and to his chagrin he seems to be the only one in his circle of family and friends who didn't know about it. Small wonder Matt tells us in his prologue that living in a tropical paradise doesn't exempt you from troubles. Additionally he has to rebuild a relationship with a rebellious teenage daughter, cope with a bigoted father-in-law who blames his frugality for his wife's condition and find a way to comply with a state law mandating the relinquishing of landholdings that have been in the family for generations.

Clooney gives a stellar performance and is a certain Oscar contender. The fine supporting cast includes Shailene Woodley and Nick Krause as his oldest daughter and her unpredictable boyfriend.  Beau Bridges is a cousin who'd like to see Matt sell their property to a big commercial developer. Robert Forster is Matt's bellicose father-in-law.  Judy Greer is another victim of marital infidelity and Matthew Lillard is her philandering husband.

Look for Kaui Hart Hemmings in a brief scene as George Clooney's secretary.

The Descendants is a darkly humorous portrait of contemporary American relationships. There are generation gaps, broken marriages, knee-jerk bigots, class divisions and the struggle between environmental preservation and greed. There are no easy answers here just some people trying to make some sense of it.
