2011 Boston and New York Film Critic Awards

Boston and New York Film Critic Awards choose the Artists
Thursday December 15th, 2011

The Boston Society of Film Critics gave out their awards. They gave The Artist Best Picture . That hasn't gone into general release yet. It won't be up the Kendall for 2 more weeks.

Brad Pitt got Best Actor for Moneyball.  Michelle Williams won Best Actress for My Week With Marilyn. Albert Brooks won Best Supporting Actor for Drive and Melissa McCarthy won Best Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids. Martin Scorsese won Best Director for Hugo. Incendies won Best Foreign Language Film. The David Brudnoy Award for best new filmmaker went to Sean Durkin for Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Meanwhile The New York Film Critics Awards were announced a few days ago. They also picked The Artist for Best Picture. Imagine a silent film in 2011? (There hasn't been a silent Best Picture Oscar winner since 1928 and Wings.)

They picked Michael Shannon as Best Actor for his great performance in Take Shelter. That's wonderful because this was a small film that isn't going to get a big studio push. I hope the Academy recognizes him with a nomination.

Meryl Street was named Best Actress for The Iron Lady, where she is playing Margaret Thatcher. Get that Oscar nomination ready (number 17 for her). Once again Melissa McCarthy won for Supporting Actress for Bridesmaids and Albert Brooks won Supporting Actor for his sadistic thug in Drive. Tree Of Life won for it's magnificent cinematography and The Descendants won for its beautiful screenplay.
